Utah or Colorado National Parks: How to Choose, and Where They Meet
November 2, 2026 · 6 min read
Utah has five national parks of red rock, and Colorado has four, led by the high mountains of Rocky Mountain. Most comparisons stop at that contrast between desert and alpine, but the practical line runs elsewhere. Rules changed in 2026. The best-known parks on each side carry the permits and timed entry and, for non-US residents, a $100 surcharge. The parks where Utah and Colorado actually meet have no surcharge and no timed entry. The rules below are for 2026; neither Arches (opens in a new tab) nor Rocky Mountain (opens in a new tab) had announced anything for 2027 by October.
Springdale and Zion, Utah
Springdale (opens in a new tab) is the town at the gate of Zion National Park (opens in a new tab), about 5.3 hours by road from Salt Lake City. From early March to late November you cannot drive your own car through Zion Canyon; a free shuttle runs from the visitor center instead.
The best-known hike is Angels Landing (opens in a new tab), 5.4 miles round trip with about 1,500 feet of climbing. You need no permit to reach Scout Lookout, but the chained section beyond it takes a lottery permit: a $6 application plus $3 per person if selected, by seasonal lottery months ahead or by a day-before draw. The Narrows (opens in a new tab), walked upstream in the river, needs no day-hike permit but closes when the flow rises above 150 cubic feet per second.
Bryce Canyon City, Utah
Bryce Canyon City (opens in a new tab) is the base for Bryce Canyon National Park (opens in a new tab), about 84 miles and a little over two hours from Springdale, so the two pair naturally. There is no timed entry, and the shuttle is voluntary. The rim sits between about 8,000 and 9,115 feet, so nights are cold even in summer and snow can fall from October to May. The Navajo Loop (opens in a new tab) drops from Sunset Point into the hoodoos.
Moab, Utah
Moab (opens in a new tab) serves two parks. Arches is about 5 miles away, and the Delicate Arch (opens in a new tab) hike is 3 miles round trip with about 480 feet of climbing on open slickrock. Arches ended its timed-entry system in February 2026, so you can enter at any hour with a pass. The exception is the Fiery Furnace, which needs a ranger tour or a permit booked in advance.
Canyonlands (opens in a new tab) is about 40 minutes away at the Island in the Sky district, where Mesa Arch (opens in a new tab) is about half a mile round trip. Its three land districts have no roads connecting them inside the park, so most people see one or two. Spring and autumn are the busy seasons here, and summer on bare rock means starting early.
Estes Park, Colorado
Estes Park (opens in a new tab) is the east entrance to Rocky Mountain, about 1.6 hours from Denver (opens in a new tab). This is the alpine trip: Trail Ridge Road climbs to 12,183 feet on its 48 miles to Grand Lake, usually from around Memorial Day until the first big snows of mid to late October.
It is also the most tightly booked park in this article. In 2026 you needed a $2 timed-entry reservation to enter between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. from May 22 to October 12. Bear Lake Road needed a separate one from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m., through October 18. About 40% of slots are released at 7 p.m. the evening before, which helps if your dates are fixed late.
Cortez, Colorado
Cortez (opens in a new tab) is the nearest large town to Mesa Verde National Park (opens in a new tab), about an hour from Chapin Mesa, with Durango (opens in a new tab) about an hour and a half away as the livelier alternative. This is the one park of the group that is about people rather than rock: Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings and mesa-top villages built between about 600 and 1300 AD.
You can enter Cliff Palace, Balcony House and the other main dwellings only on ranger tours, at $8 per person aged 3 and over, booked on Recreation.gov 14 days ahead from 8 a.m. Mountain Time. Without a ticket you still get Step House in season and the Mesa Top Loop overlooks, which look across to Cliff Palace all year.
What it costs
Entry to Zion (opens in a new tab) or Bryce (opens in a new tab) is $35 per vehicle for seven days. Arches (opens in a new tab) and Canyonlands are $30 each, and Mesa Verde $30 in season. US residents can buy the $80 America the Beautiful pass, and it pays for itself in three parks.
Non-US residents aged 16 and over pay $100 each on top at Zion, Bryce and Rocky Mountain, unless they hold an annual pass. Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde and Great Sand Dunes do not charge it.
- A non-resident couple at Zion and Bryce: $470 at the gate, against $250 for the non-resident annual pass. Buy the pass.
- The same couple at Arches, Canyonlands and Mesa Verde: $90, with no need for the pass.
Where the two states meet
Moab (opens in a new tab) and Cortez (opens in a new tab) are 114 miles apart, about two and a half hours by road. That gives you Arches, Canyonlands and Mesa Verde in a five-day trip, with one drive of any length and only the cliff dwelling tour to book.
Two detours fit between them. Hovenweep National Monument (opens in a new tab) has Ancestral Pueblo towers close to the state line. Monument Valley (opens in a new tab) is further out, about 3.3 hours from Moab and 2.9 from Cortez, and turns the drive into a triangle with a night in Bluff (opens in a new tab) or at the valley. It is a Navajo Nation tribal park, so national park passes do not apply.
For a longer trip, Denver to Moab is about 6.6 hours, passing Grand Junction (opens in a new tab) and Colorado National Monument (opens in a new tab). You can fly into Denver, see Rocky Mountain first, drive west, and return from Cortez by way of Durango. Salt Lake City to Moab is about 4.6 hours, and Springdale to Moab about 5.9, so Zion and Moab can share a trip but cost you most of a day between them.
Which one fits your trip
- Want one famous hike and don't mind lotteries and shuttles? Zion.
- Have only a long weekend from Denver? Rocky Mountain, with the reservation booked first.
- Planning a July or August trip? Colorado, or Bryce in Utah. Moab's bare rock is at its hardest then, while Trail Ridge Road is open and Bryce stays cool.
- Planning a trip in April or early May? Moab and Zion. Trail Ridge Road is not yet open.
- Have non-US passports and a tight budget? Moab and Mesa Verde.
- Want ruins and history as well as rock? Moab and Cortez together.
